How to Break Black Magic in Islam: A Complete Quran and Sunnah Guide

Black magic, known in Arabic as sihr, is a serious matter in Islam. The Quran confirms its existence, warns against its dangers, and explains that it can be used to cause division, fear, illness, confusion, and harm by the permission of Allah.

At the same time, Islam teaches Muslims not to panic, exaggerate, or attribute every personal, medical, financial, or marital problem to black magic. A responsible approach combines faith, careful assessment, lawful ruqyah, practical action, and medical or psychological evaluation when necessary.

This guide explains how to break black magic in Islam using the Quran, authentic supplications, repentance, regular worship, and a structured ruqyah treatment plan.

It also explains:

  • What black magic is in Islam.
  • The main types of sihr.
  • How humans and jinn may be involved.
  • Whether an Ashiq Jinn can harm a person through sihr.
  • Common signs associated with black magic.
  • How to perform Quran-based ruqyah.
  • What to avoid during treatment.
  • When a private assessment may be necessary.

Healing comes only from Allah. Ruqyah is a lawful means, but it has no independent power.

Allah says:

“And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.”
Quran 26:80

What Is Black Magic in Islam?

Black magic, or sihr, refers to forbidden practices used to influence, deceive, frighten, separate, confuse, or harm another person through hidden means.

Sihr may involve:

  • Seeking help from devils or rebellious jinn.
  • Talismans and unknown symbols.
  • Knots, buried objects, hair, clothing, photographs, or personal belongings.
  • Sacrifices made for other than Allah.
  • Shirk-based chants and rituals.
  • Written spells containing names, numbers, symbols, or Quranic verses mixed with falsehood.
  • Intentional attempts to cause hatred, separation, illness, fear, or emotional attachment.

Islam strictly forbids practising magic, seeking help from magicians, or believing that magic has independent power.

A magician cannot harm anyone except by the permission and decree of Allah.

Allah says:

“But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah.”
Quran 2:102

This verse does not mean that Allah approves of magic. It means that nothing happens outside His knowledge, will, and decree.

Evidence for Black Magic in the Quran

The Quran clearly confirms the existence of sihr.

The Story of Harut and Marut

Allah says:

“And they followed what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and what had been sent down to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. But they would not teach anyone without saying, ‘We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve.’ Yet people learned from them what caused separation between a man and his wife. But they could not harm anyone except by Allah’s permission.”
Quran 2:102

This verse teaches several important points:

  1. Magic is associated with disbelief and devils.
  2. Magic can be used to create separation between husband and wife.
  3. Magic does not operate independently.
  4. Seeking or practising magic is a grave sin.

The Magicians of Pharaoh

Allah describes the magicians who confronted Prophet Musa عليه السلام:

“They bewitched the eyes of the people, terrified them, and produced a great magic.”
Quran 7:116

This shows that some forms of magic involve deception, fear, and manipulation of perception.

When Musa عليه السلام threw his staff, Allah destroyed their falsehood:

“And We inspired Moses, ‘Throw your staff,’ and suddenly it swallowed up their falsehood. So the truth was established, and what they were doing was defeated.”
Quran 7:117–118

The lesson is clear: falsehood may appear powerful, but it cannot stand before the truth revealed by Allah.

Evidence from the Sunnah

The Sunnah also confirms the reality of magic.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was affected by sihr, but Allah protected his revelation and cured him.

Aisha رضي الله عنها reported that a man from Banu Zurayq performed magic against the Prophet ﷺ until he imagined that he had done something he had not done. Allah then revealed the truth of the matter and showed him where the object connected to the magic had been placed.

This incident is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

The incident teaches Muslims that:

  • Even a righteous person may be tested.
  • Magic does not indicate weak faith.
  • Treatment must remain within lawful means.
  • Allah exposes falsehood and grants healing.
  • The recitation of Quran and authentic supplications is part of lawful protection and treatment.

Black Magic Is Not the Explanation for Every Problem

A major mistake is to label every difficulty as sihr.

Not every headache is black magic.

Not every marriage delay is spiritual.

Not every business loss is caused by envy.

Not every argument between spouses is caused by jinn.

Not every mental health condition is caused by possession.

Many problems have ordinary causes, including:

  • Poor decisions.
  • Family pressure.
  • Financial instability.
  • Physical illness.
  • Anxiety or depression.
  • Trauma.
  • Relationship incompatibility.
  • Lack of sleep.
  • Hormonal or neurological conditions.
  • Stress and emotional exhaustion.

A Muslim should not abandon medical treatment, counselling, legal help, financial planning, or practical problem-solving.

Ruqyah may be used alongside lawful medical and psychological treatment when appropriate.

The Two Main Types of Black Magic

From a ruqyah perspective, sihr may be discussed under two broad categories:

  1. Magic performed by one human against another human.
  2. Harm initiated by a jinn against a human, including what some experienced practitioners describe as jinn-based sihr.

The Quran gives clear evidence that humans may learn magic from devils and use it to harm others. Claims concerning the detailed methods by which individual jinn may independently carry out sihr are generally drawn from the observations of ruqyah practitioners and traditional accounts rather than from one explicit text describing every mechanism.

For that reason, these matters should be discussed carefully and without exaggeration.

Type One: Human-to-Human Black Magic

This is the form most commonly recognised.

A person goes to a magician, sorcerer, fortune-teller, or occult practitioner and asks for harm to be directed at another individual.

The requested purpose may include:

  • Separating a husband and wife.
  • Preventing a marriage.
  • Creating hatred between family members.
  • Causing obsessive attachment.
  • Blocking employment or business.
  • Creating fear, confusion, or emotional distress.
  • Influencing a person’s thoughts or decisions.
  • Producing unexplained physical discomfort.
  • Creating repeated obstacles in daily life.

The magician may request personal items belonging to the intended victim, such as:

  • Hair.
  • Nail clippings.
  • Clothing.
  • Photographs.
  • Handwriting.
  • The person’s name and mother’s name.
  • Soil from the person’s footsteps.
  • Items touched or worn by the victim.

These objects may then be used in forbidden rituals involving knots, talismans, buried materials, blood, impurity, or acts of worship directed to other than Allah.

A Muslim must never visit such people, even if they claim to remove magic.

The Prophet ﷺ warned severely against visiting fortune-tellers and believing their claims.

Type Two: Jinn-to-Human Harm and Jinn-Based Sihr

Some ruqyah practitioners report cases in which the apparent spiritual harm was not traced to a known human magician.

In such cases, they may describe the affliction as harm initiated by a jinn against the individual.

This may be associated with:

  • Revenge after the jinn believes it was harmed.
  • Obsessive attachment.
  • Jealousy.
  • Long-term possession.
  • Attempts to isolate the patient.
  • Repeated disruption of marriage.
  • Sexual disturbances during sleep.
  • Fear, nightmares, and emotional instability.
  • Attempts to stop the patient from worship, marriage, work, or treatment.

These descriptions come largely from practical ruqyah experience and patient reports. They should not be treated as certainty without careful assessment.

The unseen belongs to Allah alone.

A responsible Raqi should not claim to know every hidden detail, identify a specific jinn with certainty, or make dramatic claims without evidence.

Can an Ashiq Jinn Perform Magic Against a Person?

The term Ashiq Jinn is commonly used by some ruqyah practitioners to describe a jinn believed to have developed an obsessive or sexual attachment to a human being.

In severe cases, practitioners report that such an affliction may be associated with:

  • Repeated obstruction of marriage.
  • Intense jealousy toward a spouse or potential spouse.
  • Sexual dreams or sensations during sleep.
  • Unexplained dislike of marriage.
  • Sudden hatred between engaged or married couples.
  • Fear of intimacy.
  • Repeated failed proposals.
  • Emotional attachment to an unseen presence.
  • Disturbing sensations in bed.
  • Persistent attempts to isolate the patient.

Some practitioners also believe that an Ashiq Jinn may participate in or initiate forms of spiritual harm intended to keep the person emotionally or physically unavailable to others.

However, this should never become an excuse to ignore practical causes.

Marriage may be delayed by family issues, finances, compatibility, personal choices, or social circumstances. Spiritual explanations should only be considered after careful assessment and should not be assumed automatically.

How Human Magic and Jinn Involvement May Connect

In many traditional accounts of sihr, the magician seeks the assistance of devils or jinn.

The magician may perform acts of disbelief or disobedience in exchange for their cooperation.

This is why Islamic scholars describe magic as closely connected to shirk, kufr, deception, and service to devils.

The human magician may prepare the ritual, while the jinn is believed to carry out the intended harm.

This can include attempts to:

  • Create emotional hatred.
  • Cause separation.
  • Intensify fear.
  • Produce recurring nightmares.
  • Disturb sleep.
  • Create obsessive thoughts.
  • Encourage sinful behaviour.
  • Prevent worship.
  • Increase conflict inside the home.

Yet even in such cases, the jinn and magician remain weak before Allah.

No magician, jinn, talisman, or spell can overcome the protection of Allah when He wills to protect and heal His servant.

Signs That May Be Associated with Black Magic

There is no single symptom that proves sihr.

Diagnosis must not be based on one dream, one headache, or one difficult week.

However, some patients report combinations of persistent symptoms, especially when they appear suddenly, repeatedly, and without an adequate explanation.

Possible signs may include:

  • Repeated unexplained nightmares.
  • Sudden intense fear.
  • Severe anxiety without a clear cause.
  • Unusual hatred between spouses.
  • Repeated marriage delays.
  • Persistent insomnia.
  • Sudden aversion to Quran or prayer.
  • Unexplained physical discomfort during ruqyah.
  • Frequent headaches.
  • Tightness in the chest.
  • Stomach pain or nausea.
  • Sudden emotional instability.
  • Repeated dreams of snakes, dark animals, dirty places, falling, drowning, graves, or being chased.
  • Feeling watched or followed.
  • Unusual sensations during sleep.
  • Repeated sexual dreams or disturbances.
  • Sudden isolation from family.
  • Strong urges to stop ruqyah.
  • Persistent unexplained obstacles in work, travel, marriage, or family life.

These signs are not proof by themselves.

Many may also have medical, psychological, social, or environmental causes.

A proper assessment should consider all reasonable explanations.

What Makes Lawful Ruqyah Different from Sorcery?

Lawful ruqyah is based on:

  • The Quran.
  • Authentic supplications.
  • Clear words whose meanings are known.
  • Belief that Allah alone heals.
  • Avoidance of shirk.
  • Avoidance of talismans.
  • Avoidance of unknown symbols.
  • Avoidance of sacrifices to jinn.
  • Avoidance of requesting the mother’s name.
  • Avoidance of secrecy and strange rituals.
  • Respect for modesty and Islamic boundaries.

A trustworthy Raqi does not:

  • Touch women unlawfully.
  • Ask patients to remove clothing.
  • Claim to control jinn.
  • Use smoke, blood, bones, or unknown powders.
  • Give secret papers containing symbols.
  • Command patients to stop prayer.
  • Demand acts against Islam.
  • Claim guaranteed results.
  • Frighten patients into dependence.
  • Isolate patients from their families.
  • Use sexual exploitation under the name of treatment.

Any practitioner who does these things should be avoided.

Lawful ruqyah brings the patient closer to Allah.

Sorcery takes the patient toward fear, dependence, secrecy, and disobedience.

What Should You Do If You Find Black Magic or a Talisman?

Finding a talisman, buried object, knotted string, or suspicious item can be frightening. However, the first step is not to panic.

A Muslim should remember that no form of magic can harm anyone except by the permission of Allah.

Before touching the object, seek protection with Allah by sincerely reciting:

  • Surah Al-Ikhlas
  • Surah Al-Falaq
  • Surah An-Nas

Recite each of them three times with the intention of seeking Allah’s protection before handling the object.

Many experienced ruqyah practitioners advise beginning with this recitation because protection always comes before attempting to remove any suspected object connected to sihr.

Prepare Water Recited Over with the Quran

Fill a large bowl or container with clean water.

Recite over the water:

  • Surah Al-Ikhlas (3 times)
  • Surah Al-Falaq (3 times)
  • Surah An-Nas (3 times)

After each recitation, lightly blow into the water.

The water is now ready to be used while dismantling the suspected object.

If the Magic Contains Knots

If the object contains tied knots, place it inside the recited water.

Carefully untie each knot.

If a knot cannot be untied, it may be cut carefully with a blade while continuously reciting Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas.

If the Magic Contains Written Talismans

If the object contains papers with symbols, numbers, unknown writing, or talismans, place them inside the recited water.

Gently rub the writing until the ink disappears or the paper completely dissolves in the water.

If Hair, Nails, or Clothing Are Found

Sometimes magicians use personal belongings belonging to the victim.

These may include:

  • Hair
  • Nail clippings
  • Pieces of clothing
  • Personal fabric

Place these items inside the recited water and rub them until they break apart as much as possible.

If Pins or Needles Are Found

Some forms of sihr contain pins or needles inserted into cloth, wax, or other materials.

Remove each pin carefully while remembering Allah and continuing the recitation of the protective surahs.

If a Doll or Figurine Is Found

If the object includes a doll, figurine, or similar item believed to have been used as part of the sihr, it may be cut apart and placed in the recited water before disposal.

How Should the Remaining Materials Be Disposed Of?

After dismantling the suspected object, leave all of its contents inside the recited water.

Dispose of the water together with the remaining materials in a place where people will not be harmed or disturbed, such as a flowing body of water where this is lawful and environmentally appropriate, or another suitable location away from normal use.

After disposal, continue your daily ruqyah, morning and evening adhkar, and place your trust completely in Allah.

How to Break Black Magic According to the Quran and Sunnah

The most important principle every Muslim should remember is that Allah alone removes black magic.

No raqi, scholar, medicine, herb, or treatment has independent power.

Ruqyah is simply a lawful means prescribed in Islam. Healing belongs entirely to Allah.

Allah says:

“If Allah touches you with harm, none can remove it except Him.”

Quran 6:17

For this reason, the patient’s heart should always remain attached to Allah rather than to any individual.

Step 1: Renew Your Tawheed

Before beginning any ruqyah program, a Muslim should correct his relationship with Allah.

Many people focus only on removing the magic while forgetting to strengthen their worship.

The greatest protection against every spiritual harm is sincere Tawheed.

This includes:

  • Praying the five daily prayers on time.
  • Avoiding shirk.
  • Making sincere tawbah.
  • Increasing istighfar.
  • Giving charity.
  • Reading the Quran daily.
  • Maintaining the morning and evening adhkar.
  • Trusting Allah completely.

Without strengthening one’s relationship with Allah, the treatment remains incomplete.

Step 2: Remove Everything That Attracts Shaytan

Many homes unknowingly contain things that strengthen the influence of Shaytan.

Although these items do not “cause” black magic by themselves, they weaken the spiritual environment of the home.

Examples include:

  • Amulets.
  • Talismans.
  • Horoscope books.
  • Magic symbols.
  • Fortune-telling materials.
  • Pictures used for worship.
  • Objects dedicated to saints.
  • Music played continuously.
  • Open sinful behaviour.
  • Neglecting prayer.

The Prophet ﷺ taught us that Shaytan flees from a home in which Surah Al-Baqarah is regularly recited.

Step 3: Perform Daily Quran-Based Ruqyah

The Quran is the greatest cure for spiritual illnesses.

Allah says:

“And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers.”

Quran 17:82

During treatment, many ruqyah practitioners recommend regular recitation of verses associated with protection and healing.

Commonly recited passages include:

  • Surah Al-Fatihah.
  • Ayatul Kursi.
  • The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas.
  • Surah Al-Falaq.
  • Surah An-Nas.

Many patients also benefit from listening attentively to Quran recitation during private ruqyah sessions.

The purpose is not merely to play audio in the background but to listen with concentration, reflection, and hope in Allah’s mercy.

Step 4: Continue the Treatment Without Interruptions

One of the biggest mistakes patients make is stopping treatment as soon as they notice improvement.

This is similar to a patient stopping antibiotics halfway through the prescribed course simply because they feel better.

During many years of ruqyah practice, we have observed that consistency is one of the most important factors in recovery.

Some patients experience rapid improvement.

Others require months of treatment.

More severe cases may require longer.

The duration depends on many factors known only to Allah.

For this reason, patients should not judge their progress by comparing themselves with others.

Step 5: Expect Tests During the Healing Journey

Some patients become frightened when symptoms temporarily become stronger.

This does not happen in every case.

However, experienced ruqyah practitioners sometimes observe temporary increases in symptoms during treatment, particularly in more severe cases.

Examples may include:

  • Increased yawning.
  • Crying.
  • Temporary headaches.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Increased sleepiness.
  • Temporary fear.
  • Strong emotional reactions during Quran recitation.

These reactions should not automatically be interpreted as proof of black magic.

Nor should they cause the patient to abandon treatment.

If symptoms become severe or unusual, the patient should consult both the treating physician and the supervising Raqi.

Step 6: Protect Yourself Every Day

Breaking black magic is not only about treatment.

It is also about protection.

The Prophet ﷺ taught many daily acts of protection, including:

  • Morning adhkar.
  • Evening adhkar.
  • Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer.
  • Ayatul Kursi before sleeping.
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas.
  • Surah Al-Falaq.
  • Surah An-Nas.
  • Saying Bismillah before eating.
  • Saying Bismillah before entering the home.
  • Maintaining wudu whenever possible.

These daily acts become a shield by the permission of Allah.

Step 7: Be Patient

Many people expect immediate healing.

Sometimes Allah grants immediate relief.

Sometimes He tests His servant with patience.

Allah says:

“Indeed, Allah is with the patient.”

Quran 2:153

Every difficulty raises the believer’s rank when met with patience and reliance upon Allah.

Can Black Magic Be Removed at Home?

Yes.

Many Muslims successfully perform self-ruqyah.

A person may:

  • Recite the Quran over themselves.
  • Blow lightly into their hands and wipe over the body.
  • Recite over water before drinking it.
  • Recite over olive oil before applying it.
  • Increase dua.
  • Maintain daily worship.

Self-ruqyah is encouraged for every Muslim.

However, some patients experience symptoms that are severe, prolonged, or difficult to understand.

In such situations, a private assessment with an experienced Raqi may help determine an appropriate treatment plan while remaining within the teachings of the Quran and authentic Sunnah.

Common Mistakes During Black Magic Treatment

Many patients unintentionally delay their own recovery.

Some of the most common mistakes include:

Visiting Magicians to Remove Magic

One of the greatest mistakes is visiting another magician in order to remove magic.

Islam does not permit fighting one form of falsehood with another.

Only lawful ruqyah should be used.

Stopping Ruqyah Too Early

Improvement does not always mean the treatment has been completed.

Patients should continue according to the agreed treatment plan.

Expecting Miracles Overnight

Healing is different for every individual.

Some recover quickly.

Others require patience over several months.

Becoming Obsessed With Symptoms

Some patients monitor every sensation in their body.

This creates unnecessary anxiety.

Instead, continue worship, treatment, and normal life.

Ignoring Medical Care

Islam encourages seeking medical treatment.

If symptoms may have a medical explanation, patients should consult qualified healthcare professionals while continuing lawful ruqyah when appropriate.

Ruqyah and medical treatment can exist together without contradiction.

Can Black Magic Return?

A Muslim should not live in constant fear that black magic will always return.

Instead, after recovery, continue maintaining:

  • Daily prayer.
  • Quran recitation.
  • Morning and evening adhkar.
  • Tawheed.
  • Trust in Allah.
  • Avoidance of sins.

A believer whose heart remains connected to Allah possesses the greatest protection.

The strongest fortress against every spiritual harm is sincere faith.

When Should You Book an Assessment Session?

Not every difficulty is caused by black magic.

Not every illness is spiritual.

However, if you have experienced persistent unexplained spiritual symptoms, repeated marriage delays, disturbing sleep experiences, strong reactions during Quran recitation, or long-term problems that remain unexplained after reasonable evaluation, a private Assessment Session may help determine whether a structured ruqyah treatment program is appropriate.

At the Ruqyah and Ajwah Center, every patient receives a private one-to-one assessment.

Treatment plans are tailored to the individual rather than delivered through large group sessions.

The goal is always the same:

To help the patient seek healing through the Quran and authentic Sunnah while placing complete trust in Allah alone.

(Continued in Part 3: Frequently Asked Questions, Internal Links, and Final Call to Action.)

Important: If you are unsure whether an object is actually connected to sihr, or if you do not know how to deal with it safely, do not act hastily. Seek guidance from a trustworthy Raqi who follows the Quran and authentic Sunnah. Avoid taking suspicious items to magicians, fortune-tellers, or anyone who uses talismans, unknown symbols, or practices that contradict Islam.
