Why Do Similar Problems Sometimes Appear Across Generations?
Many people have noticed a pattern within their families that is difficult to ignore. A grandfather suffered from unusual problems, then a parent experienced similar difficulties, and later the children began facing many of the same struggles. This often leads to an important question:
Can Spiritual Problems Affect Multiple Generations of the Same Family?
This subject should be approached with balance. Muslims should not speak about the unseen without evidence, but at the same time, they should not ignore what is clearly established in the Qur’an, Sunnah, and practical experience.
Shaytan and Future Generations in the Qur’an and Sunnah
One of the strongest pieces of evidence comes from the supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ before marital relations:
“In the name of Allah. O Allah, keep Shaytan away from us and keep Shaytan away from what You provide us.”
The Prophet ﷺ then said:
“If a child is decreed for them, Shaytan will never harm him.”
(Recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.)
This authentic hadith demonstrates that the protection of future children from the harm of Shaytan begins even before their birth. The Prophet ﷺ specifically connected this supplication to protection from Shaytan’s influence.
Allah also says:
“And share with them in wealth and children.”
(Qur’an 17:64)
This verse shows that Shaytan seeks to influence people, their wealth, and their offspring. While this does not mean that Shaytan becomes part of a person’s bloodline, it clearly shows that he seeks to affect future generations whenever possible.
Does This Mean a Jinn Is Inherited?
Islam does not teach that a jinn is genetically inherited like physical characteristics.
However, the Qur’an and Sunnah indicate that Shaytan can influence families, children, and future generations. This influence may continue when spiritual problems remain untreated for many years or when households neglect the means of protection prescribed in Islam.
For this reason, some families may experience recurring spiritual difficulties over several generations.
What We Have Observed Through Ruqyah Treatment
During many years of Ruqyah practice, we have treated families from different countries and backgrounds. One observation that has appeared repeatedly is that some parents suffered from clear spiritual problems for many years but never sought Ruqyah treatment.
In a number of cases, the parents themselves experienced symptoms such as persistent nightmares, unexplained fears, emotional instability, unusual family conflicts, or other signs commonly associated with spiritual distress. Yet these issues remained unaddressed.
Years later, similar difficulties began appearing among their children.
Sometimes this appeared as:
- Repeated marriage delays.
- Difficulties finding suitable spouses.
- Unexplained obstacles in employment and livelihood.
- Persistent family conflicts.
- Emotional distress and anxiety.
- Physical complaints that continued despite extensive medical investigations.
- Health conditions that showed little improvement despite ongoing treatment.
Not every case is caused by spiritual factors, and medical causes should always be considered. However, practical experience has shown that when genuine spiritual problems remain neglected for many years, their effects may become more noticeable within the family.
Spiritual Problems Should Not Be Ignored
Consider a simple example.
If a person develops a high fever and completely ignores it without seeking treatment, the condition may worsen and eventually become dangerous.
The fever itself may not be the greatest problem. The real danger comes from neglecting it.
Problems that are addressed early are usually easier to manage than problems that are ignored for years.
Likewise, when genuine spiritual problems are present and remain untreated, they may gradually become more severe over time.
Many people spend years living with symptoms while hoping that the problem will disappear on its own. Unfortunately, this is not always what happens. Just as untreated physical illnesses can worsen, untreated spiritual problems may also become more deeply rooted and more disruptive over time.
Protection and Treatment Are Not Always the Same Thing
One of the most common misunderstandings among people suffering from spiritual symptoms is the belief that daily adhkar alone will always be sufficient to remove every spiritual problem.
There is no doubt that morning and evening adhkar are among the greatest forms of protection in Islam. Every Muslim should maintain them consistently whether they are experiencing symptoms or not. Adhkar strengthen faith, protect the believer, and help guard against many forms of spiritual harm.
However, it is important to understand the difference between protection and treatment.
A healthy person recites adhkar as a means of protection and prevention.
A person suffering from severe spiritual symptoms may require treatment in addition to protection.
Many people confuse these two matters.
In some mild cases, a person may notice significant improvement through sincere repentance, regular prayer, daily adhkar, Qur’an recitation, and self-Ruqyah. These acts are powerful means of healing granted by Allah.
However, not every condition remains mild.
When symptoms become severe, continue for many years, repeatedly disrupt a person’s life, affect marriage, livelihood, family relationships, emotional stability, or physical well-being, additional treatment may become necessary.
The Prophet ﷺ did not merely teach adhkar.
He performed Ruqyah.
He sought Ruqyah.
He approved Ruqyah among his companions.
This demonstrates that treatment has a place alongside protection.
Through years of Ruqyah treatment, we have met many patients who suffered from serious symptoms for years while relying only upon adhkar. Some believed that treatment was unnecessary and expected the condition to disappear on its own.
Unfortunately, many of these patients experienced worsening symptoms over time.
Some developed severe marriage delays.
Others faced increasing obstacles in livelihood and employment.
Some experienced growing family conflicts.
Others developed physical symptoms that continued despite medical examinations and treatment.
This does not mean that adhkar are ineffective.
Rather, it means that severe conditions sometimes require treatment in addition to protection.
A useful comparison can be made with physical illness.
If a person develops a mild fever, simple care may be enough.
However, if the fever becomes severe and continues worsening, proper treatment becomes necessary.
The same principle applies to spiritual illness.
When symptoms become severe, persistent, and disruptive to a person’s life, authentic Ruqyah treatment may be necessary alongside daily adhkar, worship, and personal Ruqyah.
The best approach is not to choose between adhkar and Ruqyah treatment.
A Muslim should combine both.
- Daily adhkar provide protection.
- Authentic Ruqyah provides treatment.
Both are means created by Allah, while healing ultimately comes from Allah alone.
For this reason, anyone experiencing severe or long-standing spiritual symptoms should not delay seeking help from a trustworthy Ruqyah practitioner who follows the Qur’an and Sunnah and avoids innovations, talismans, magic, and prohibited practices.
Can the Evil Eye Affect Multiple Family Members?
Yes.
The evil eye is a reality established in authentic Islamic teachings.
Sometimes envy is directed toward one individual. In other situations, envy is directed toward an entire family because of their blessings, wealth, knowledge, children, marriage, success, or social standing.
When this happens, different family members may experience difficulties at different times.
This does not mean the evil eye is inherited. Rather, the same family may repeatedly become the target of envy.
Why Do Similar Problems Repeat in Some Families?
Several factors may contribute:
1. Lack of Spiritual Protection
When prayer, Qur’an recitation, and daily adhkar are neglected, spiritual vulnerabilities increase.
2. Untreated Spiritual Problems
Problems that remain unaddressed for many years may become more complicated over time.
3. Continuous Exposure to Envy
Families blessed with success, wealth, beauty, or influence may attract repeated jealousy from others.
4. Family Habits and Environment
Some problems may be linked to learned behaviors, unhealthy family patterns, or long-standing emotional difficulties.
5. Shaytan’s Continued Influence
Shaytan constantly seeks opportunities to create division, conflict, fear, and hardship within households.
How Can Families Protect Themselves?
The best protection remains the protection taught by Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
Every family should strive to maintain:
- The five daily prayers.
- Morning and evening adhkar.
- Daily recitation of the Qur’an.
- Ayat al-Kursi.
- Surah Al-Ikhlas.
- Surah Al-Falaq.
- Surah An-Nas.
- Regular authentic Ruqyah when needed.
- Reliance upon Allah in all affairs.
These practices strengthen faith and provide protection against many forms of harm.
A Balanced Perspective
It is important not to assume that every family problem is caused by black magic, the evil eye, or jinn.
Medical, psychological, financial, and social factors should always be considered.
At the same time, Muslims should not dismiss the reality of spiritual harm that is clearly established in the Qur’an and Sunnah.
The correct approach is balance: taking practical steps, seeking appropriate treatment, strengthening one’s relationship with Allah, and using authentic Ruqyah whenever necessary.
Conclusion
The Qur’an and Sunnah indicate that Shaytan seeks to influence human beings and their descendants. The Prophet ﷺ taught specific supplications to protect future children, and Allah informed us that Shaytan seeks involvement in people’s wealth and offspring.
While this does not mean that jinn are inherited like physical characteristics, it does show that spiritual problems can sometimes affect multiple members of the same family, particularly when they remain neglected for many years.
For this reason, Muslims should take spiritual protection seriously, seek authentic Ruqyah when needed, and remember that healing, protection, and guidance ultimately come from Allah alone.
