Jinn Possession in Islam: Signs, Symptoms and How to Get Rid of It

Treatment for Ruqyah Jinn Possession Treatment

Jinn possession (in Arabic mass or sar’) is real according to the Quran, the Sunnah and the agreement of Ahl al-Sunnah scholars. It means a jinn harming a person from the inside, affecting their body, mind or behaviour. Commonly reported signs include strong aversion to the Quran and adhan, frightening dreams, sudden personality changes, and unexplained pain or heaviness. It is treated with Ruqyah: reciting the Quran and authentic supplications with trust in Allah, together with prayer, daily adhkar and avoiding sins. Because many of these signs can also have medical or psychological causes, a medical check-up should always come first.

This guide explains what jinn possession is in Islam, the signs people commonly report, how to tell it apart from medical conditions, and how to get rid of a jinn according to the Quran and Sunnah. It is written by Sheikh Abrar Ul Haq, a graduate of the Islamic University of Madinah who has provided Ruqyah since 2010.

Can a Jinn Possess a Human in Islam?

Yes. Allah says about those who consume interest: “Those who consume riba will not stand except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity (al-mass)” (Quran 2:275). Scholars of tafsir explain this verse as evidence that Satan can touch and affect a person.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Satan flows through the son of Adam as blood flows” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2035; Sahih Muslim 2175). When Uthman ibn Abi al-As complained that something was disturbing him in his prayer, the Prophet ﷺ struck his chest and said: “Get out, enemy of Allah,” and Uthman was not troubled again (Sunan Ibn Majah 3548).

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah wrote that the entry of jinn into the human body is established by the agreement of the imams of Ahl al-Sunnah (Majmu’ al-Fatawa 24/276). At the same time, Islam does not teach us to blame every illness or problem on jinn, as explained below.

What Causes Jinn Harm?

Allah has placed a barrier between humans and jinn and appointed angels to protect mankind by His permission. Devils cannot overpower a person except by Allah’s decree and through certain causes. The most common causes we see are:

  • The evil eye and envy: among the most common causes of spiritual harm. The effects may begin gradually and grow stronger over time. Read about the evil eye in Islam.
  • Black magic (sihr): established in the Quran and Sunnah and one of the major sins. See how to remove black magic in Islam.
  • Harm done to the jinn: scholars have mentioned cases in which harming a jinn becomes a reason for retaliation.
  • Seeking help from jinn: dealing with jinn, learning magic or trying to use jinn as servants are among the most dangerous causes of affliction.

Types of Jinn Harm

  • Possession (mass): a jinn affecting the person from within, sometimes causing loss of control, seizures or a change of voice.
  • External harm: whispering (waswas), frightening dreams, or disturbances around the person without full possession.
  • Harm through magic: a jinn working through black magic, often with symptoms of separation, illness or blocked affairs.
  • The ashiq jinn: a devil that becomes intensely attached to harming a person and disrupting their life. The word “ashiq” does not mean love in the human sense; it describes an intense attachment to causing harm and corruption. In our experience it is often among the most difficult cases to treat. Read what an ashiq jinn is and its symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms of Jinn Possession

There is no single sign that proves jinn possession, and no laboratory test for it. The signs below are what patients commonly report. Not everyone who has them is afflicted, and a proper assessment is needed before reaching any conclusion:

Signs during sleep

  • Insomnia, waking up suddenly in fear, or feeling something sitting on the chest
  • Repeated dreams of falling from heights, drowning, bathrooms, snakes, black dogs, aggressive cats, lions or being chased
  • Grinding teeth, screaming or laughing during sleep, or sleepwalking

Physical signs

  • Heavy, red or itchy eyes, chronic headaches, dizziness and excessive yawning
  • Extreme fatigue, or unexplained pain, heaviness or numbness that moves around the body
  • Fainting episodes or unexplained scratches on the skin

Psychological, social and spiritual signs

  • Fear, anxiety, sudden anger or depression without a clear cause
  • Strong aversion between spouses, or sudden distance from parents and siblings
  • Hearing voices or seeing things others do not see
  • Aversion to the Quran and the adhan, laziness in prayer, and neglect of dhikr

Reactions during Ruqyah, such as shaking, crying, screaming, yawning or vomiting, are common, but on their own they do not prove possession, and they do not prove that a jinn has left. Recovery is not judged by a single symptom.

Important: seizures, hearing voices, hallucinations, sudden personality changes and sleep paralysis can all have medical and psychiatric causes such as epilepsy, psychosis, bipolar disorder, severe anxiety or sleep disorders. These need proper medical assessment. Islam encourages medical treatment, and Ruqyah can be done alongside it. During the Prophet’s time, a woman who suffered from seizures came to him, and he offered her the choice of patience with Paradise or his supplication (Sahih al-Bukhari 5652; Sahih Muslim 2576).

Is It Jinn Possession or a Mental Health Condition?

This is one of the most important questions, and it should never be answered by guesswork. Some points that help:

  • See a doctor first, especially for seizures, voices, hallucinations or thoughts of self-harm. A medical diagnosis does not contradict faith.
  • Do not diagnose yourself from internet articles. Self-diagnosis leads to confusion and unnecessary fear.
  • Book a proper assessment with an experienced, trustworthy raqi. An assessment session helps distinguish between the evil eye, envy, black magic and jinn affliction, so the right treatment plan can be set.
  • Do both when unsure. Continuing prescribed medical treatment while receiving Ruqyah is the safest path.
  • Avoid anyone who diagnoses jinn instantly from a photo, your mother’s name or a short phone call.

How to Get Rid of a Jinn According to the Quran and Sunnah

1. Strengthen your connection with Allah

Guard the five daily prayers on time, repent from sins, and remove what attracts devils: music, images of living beings displayed in the home, and anything prohibited. The angels of mercy do not enter a house with images or dogs (Sahih al-Bukhari 3225).

2. Daily Ruqyah with the Quran

Recite, or listen with full attention to, the verses of Ruqyah every day:

  • Surah Al-Fatiha
  • Ayat al-Kursi (2:255)
  • The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285-286)
  • Verses about the jinn and devils, such as 37:1-10 and 72:1-9
  • Surahs Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas

The Prophet ﷺ used Al-Falaq and An-Nas for protection from the jinn and the evil eye and left everything else (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2058). Recite over water and drink from it, and recite into your hands and wipe over your body.

3. Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in your home

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not make your houses graves. Satan flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited” (Sahih Muslim 780).

4. Keep the daily protections

  • Ayat al-Kursi before sleep: a guardian from Allah stays with you and no devil comes near you until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).
  • “La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir” 100 times a day: protection from Satan for that day (Sahih al-Bukhari 3293).
  • Saying “Bismillah” when entering the home and before eating (Sahih Muslim 2018).
  • The dua before entering the toilet: “Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba’ith” (Sahih al-Bukhari 142).
  • The morning and evening adhkar every day.

Adhkar are protection, Ruqyah is treatment. Many Muslims believe the morning and evening adhkar alone will remove an existing affliction. The adhkar are among the greatest means of protection, but Ruqyah is the treatment for an affliction that is already present. Protection should never replace treatment, and treatment should never replace protection.

5. Daily Ruqyah from a qualified raqi

Receiving Ruqyah from someone else is from the Sunnah: Jibreel performed Ruqyah on the Prophet ﷺ (Sahih Muslim 2186), and the Prophet ﷺ said: “There is no harm in Ruqyah as long as it does not involve shirk” (Sahih Muslim 2200). When symptoms are strong, many patients cannot treat themselves. In our experience, difficult cases benefit most from a structured Ruqyah session every day, around one hour, under the supervision of one experienced raqi, together with a daily program at home. One or two sessions a week is often not enough. Our Ruqyah treatment for jinn possession includes live online sessions every day from Sunday to Thursday.

6. Be consistent and do not stop early

  • Consistency is the secret of successful treatment. Some difficult cases need daily Ruqyah for many months, and sometimes a year or more. The duration differs for each person.
  • Do not stop when you feel better. Symptoms can go quiet for a while and then return stronger if treatment is stopped too early. Improvement is not proof that treatment is complete.
  • Do not keep changing raqis. Moving from one practitioner to another, hoping for a single-session cure, usually delays recovery. Stay with one structured program unless there is a real reason to change.
  • Expect tests of motivation. Many patients suddenly lose motivation, make excuses or start doubting the treatment. Recognise this and continue.

How to Get Rid of a Jinn Immediately

There is no single session that guarantees complete recovery, and no secret technique that forces a jinn to leave immediately. Healing is from Allah and often takes time. But in a moment of attack, fear or a strong episode, these steps are from the Sunnah:

  1. Say “A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim” and remember Allah.
  2. Recite Ayat al-Kursi and Surahs Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas aloud.
  3. Call the adhan: when the adhan is called, Satan flees (Sahih al-Bukhari 608).
  4. Play or recite Surah Al-Baqarah in the home.
  5. If the person is in danger, has a seizure, or may harm themselves, seek emergency medical help immediately.

What to Avoid

  • Magicians and “amils”: asking them to remove a jinn is forbidden and often makes matters worse. The Prophet ﷺ described undoing magic with magic as “the work of Satan” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3868).
  • Taweez and amulets with numbers, squares or unknown writing.
  • Beating, choking or harming the patient. Ruqyah is recitation, not violence. Patients have been seriously injured by people claiming to remove jinn.
  • Talking to the jinn or trying to make it appear. Summoning the jinn, asking why it came or who did magic, and long conversations with it are not part of Ruqyah. The purpose of Ruqyah is to recite the Quran and supplicate to Allah, not to communicate with the jinn. Healing comes from Allah, not from negotiating with the jinn.
  • Stopping medical treatment without a doctor’s advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a jinn possess a human in Islam?

Yes. Possession is established by the Quran (2:275), the Sunnah (Sahih al-Bukhari 2035; Sunan Ibn Majah 3548) and the agreement of Ahl al-Sunnah scholars. It happens by the permission of Allah, and the believer is protected through prayer, the Quran and daily adhkar.

What are the signs of jinn possession?

Common signs include aversion to the Quran and adhan, frightening dreams, sudden personality changes and unexplained moving pain. No single sign proves possession, many of these signs have medical causes, and a proper assessment is needed rather than self-diagnosis.

How do I get rid of a jinn immediately?

Seek refuge in Allah, recite Ayat al-Kursi, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas aloud, call the adhan and recite Surah Al-Baqarah. Lasting removal usually needs consistent Ruqyah over time. In a medical emergency, get medical help first.

Can I do Ruqyah for jinn possession myself?

Yes. Self-Ruqyah, prayer and daily adhkar are the foundation of treatment. When symptoms are strong, a person may not be able to recite, so family members or a qualified raqi can help.

How long does it take to remove a jinn?

There is no fixed timeline; recovery is in the Hands of Allah. Some cases improve quickly, while difficult cases may need daily Ruqyah for many months or longer. Consistency is the most important factor, so continue the program even after symptoms ease.

Are morning and evening adhkar enough to remove a jinn?

The adhkar are among the greatest forms of daily protection, but when a person is already afflicted, Ruqyah is the treatment. Both should continue together throughout recovery.

Is it jinn possession or mental illness?

It can be either, or both together. Seizures, voices and hallucinations must be assessed by a doctor. Ruqyah does not replace psychiatric or medical care, and both can be combined.

Can online Ruqyah help with jinn possession?

Many patients abroad have benefited from live online sessions combined with their own daily Ruqyah. Reciting directly over the patient is the more established form, so self-Ruqyah and Ruqyah by family members remain essential.
